Dry skin can be caused by many things; harsh winds, extremely hot or extremely cold temperatures or living in an area that lacks humidity. It could be using the wrong moisturizer, or no moisturizer at all, too much bathing or swimming in chlorinated water. Anyone who's spent too much time in a swimming pool knows how the chlorinated water can cause itchy skin. But what you may not be aware of is how the familiar stuff that comes out of your faucet might just be making things worse. We usually think of tap water as just 'plain old water', and that it's the same everywhere. This isn't necessarily so. What your water company may be providing is 'hard water'. This simply means that it's water with a high content of chalk, lime, magnesium or other minerals. Chlorine to kill bacteria might also be present. Chemicals in the Tap Water
Chlorine irritates skin, and some the minerals present have the potential to do so as well. The gradual build-up of these will leave ugly stains and scaly deposits on your tubs, tiles and kitchenware, and may eventually clog up pipes. Soaps and detergents will not dissolve as easily. You will ultimately have to use more of these, and it's well known that soaps can cause dry skin. They won't wash off as easily either, and you'll be left with a irritating residue on your skin after you bathe, or dried-up soap, fabric softener or laundry chemicals on your freshly-washed clothes. This can be especially bothersome for people with more serious skin problems such as psoriasis or eczema. You can find instant relief by moving to an area with softer water, of course, but a less drastic solution would be to install a water softener. The Effect Of Water SoftenersThese are devices typically attached where water pipes enter your house, next to your house water filter. Think of them as a kind of filter as well, but for minerals rather than dirt particles. They clear out a high percentage of the chlorine, calcium salt and magnesium salt content from your water before it gets to the tap.The resulting dechlorinated soft water is already by itself much kinder to hair and skin. There's an economic benefit too: you'll spend less, as you won't need as much soap and detergent as before. They'll dissolve much more quickly in soft water, and smaller amounts will get the job done. They'll wash away easily as well, meaning no more nasty, irritating residues on skin and clothes. There are many brands and kinds of water softener on the market. Your choice will depend on the exact nature and hardness of the water you're receiving, physical space considerations, how seldom you want to do regular maintenance, and of course, your budget. But whichever kind you get, if you suffer from dry skin or some other troublesome skin condition, your water softener will bring a direct, noticeable improvement to your daily life and comfort.
