7 Different Types Of House Filtration Systems

Using water filter systems in your home can prevent illnesses and other harm caused by drinking contaminated water.

By removing chemicals like chlorine and VOCs, you are not ingesting these harmful substances on a daily basis.

If you use a whole house water filter, you are also removing sediments that may harm your water-using appliances.

Most Common Water Filtration Systems

1. Pitchers are the easiest way to get filtered drinking water. Brita and Pur both make nice sized pitchers that utilize a disposable filter in the top.

If you use a lot of water, though, it can get tiresome to keep filling the pitcher and having to wait for the water to filter through.

2. Faucet-mounted water filters are the next step up from keeping a filtered pitcher in the refrigerator. These filters mount onto your faucet, and also utilize disposable filters.

While faster than the pitcher, it can slow down your water flow. Most have an option to choose filtered or nonfiltered when you turn on the tap.

3. Under the sink filters are the answer if you want to keep your water filter system out of sight. They filter water faster than the faucet-mounted varieties. While disposable, the filter cartridges will last longer on under the sink models than above the sink models.

4. Reverse osmosis filters are the only answer if your water contains nitrates and perchlorate. They are very wasteful and slow however—approximately five gallons are wasted for every gallon of pure water that is filtered.

The contaminants are backflushed back into the community water supply. Reverse osmosis filters also take out beneficial chemicals as well, like calcium.

Recommended: R.O. UltraTec can provide you with customizable RO water filtration systems for residential and commercial needs.

5. Whole water house filters treat the entire water supply for your house, so all the water you use, including for bathing, laundry, and the toilet, have been filtered. The cartridges last a long time, and water flow is high.

6. Distillation filters boil the water and condense the steam into pure water.

Most impurities are left behind in the process, but chlorine and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) will need to be removed with an additional filtration system.

Some feel the water tastes flat from distillation, and these systems may be difficult to find.

7. Ceramic filters are relatively new on the market, and are based on age-old technology that has been used in third world countries to filter water for drinking. If you want to use a ceramic filter, check that it has been certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF).

How Water Filter Systems Work

Most of these water filtration systems use activated carbon to remove many chemicals, odors, flavors, and organic compounds. Carbon is effective in removing chlorine, VOCs, radon, pesticides, benzene, hydrogen sulfide, odors and colors.

Larger systems may use microfiltration to remove sediments from the water supply. Ultra microfiltration is also available that will not only remove sediment, but even microorganisms.

Reverse osmosis filters water through a semi-permeable membrane placed between two solutions… one is dilute, and the other is concentrated. Reverse osmosis removes a large amount of contaminants, but the sheer volume of water it needs makes it more difficult to use.

Did you know there are over 2100 known contaminants in the water supply, and this includes several types of poison? Community water supplies cannot always be protected from dangerous bacterial outbreaks.

Several studies from the EPA show that lead quantities in drinking water contribute to over 400,000 cases of learning disorders in this country every year.

It makes you think twice about the cost of using water filtration. Even using a filtered pitcher in your refrigerator will help reduce your exposure to these potential dangers.

Recommended Water Filter Systems

If you’d like your water filter out of sight, you may want to try a ceramic undercounter water filter purifier system with a Doulton ceramic filter cartridge by BestFilters.

With a filtration efficiency of 99.99%, it gets you as close to pure water as you can be.

The filter cartridge gives you three stages of filtration, including a ceramic sub-micron level and bacteriostatic and self-sterilizing due to the silver embedded in the ceramic for level one.

Level two consists of an activated carbon block to remove chlorine and other organic compounds. Level three reduces lead and other heavy metals.

Reviews rate this as one of the better undersink filters on the market. Consumers say it is easy to install and the filter lasts a long time.

Culligan also offers a highly rated undersink water filter system that fits in almost any budget.

Consumers rate it as excellent, and say the installation is easy, even if you are not an accomplished do-it-yourselfer.

The filtered water tastes great, and they did not notice a large decrease in water flow like you get with some water filters.
