The hot water is brown after water softener regeneration

by Marilyn

We have a water softener system in the house we just started renting. Don't know how long it's been unused.

My husband got it started with just advice from other people that have had them. At night it cycles a bunch of water and by morning it's brown.

However, the cold water isn't brown only the hot. What is this? If it is the resin what is the origin of the resin & is it safe to bathe in?

The water softener will need to be rebedded
by: Matt Ulrich

You probably have "fouled" resin. The water softener may be hooked up to the hot only, if discoloration is visible in the hot water only. This is fairly common if the water has been unused for some time. The softener will probably need to be rebedded. The resin is made of polystyrene. It is not harmful.
