Tap Water Purifier Commonly Used For Aquariums
A tap water purifier fits onto your sinks faucet.
You simply screw the purifier on, and when you run your tap water, the purifier filters out any impurities or chemicals that need to be removed.
These impurities are caught in a filter, and you are left with only pure, clean, and healthy water.
Tap water purifiers are also very common with freshwater or saltwater aquariums where the quality of water is crucial to make it a safe environment for fish.
By not filtering out the impurities in your tap water, you could be sentencing your fish to death. Both chlorine and chloramine, which are readily found in tap water, can kill fish.
The impurities act to break down to ammonia and chlorine, and combined with amino acids and proteins that are already found in aquarium water, they form the more toxic organic chloramine. This passes through the gills of the fish and enters the blood stream, penetrating the red blood cells and causes the breakdown and eventual destruction of red blood cells.
The Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Inc. (API) Tap Water Purifier
The API tap purifier is actually a filter column that has an ion-exchange resin and an activated carbon component. The kit comes with one column and the hardware to attach it to your tap.
It also has a bottle of solution to restore the minerals in your water to the necessary level, as well as adjusting the pH level. The column is what removes the minerals and pesticides, pollutants, chlorine, etc.
The unit is 2 1/2 inches around and 13 1/2 inches high. You can connect the column easily to your tap, and it produces around 10 gallons of pure water per hour.
Of course, this will all depend on how hard your water is, and on how pure the purifier has to make it. And, unlike reverse osmosis filters, you don’t have any waste water.
So, you attach the tap water filter to your faucet, and it changes colors as the impurities such as calcium, sodium, fluoride, chloride, potassium, etc are removed. Heavy metals are also removed, such things as copper, zinc, lead, and iron.
It is also said to filter organic pollutants, insecticides, and pesticides. The API purifier is not electric, but runs on the pressure from your sinks faucet when you hook it up with the adapter. It’s also not a carbon filter.
There are small pellets, made from resin, that absorb the impurities in your water, and when the impurities are depleted, the pellets turn to a purple in color, so that you know when the filter has finished purifying your water.
The API water purifier is easy to use and efficient, and you can get up to 10 gallons of purified water every hours. It gives you chemical free water for all sea and freshwater aquariums.
Aquarium Pharmaceuticals has vastly improved their tap water purifier over the last few years. Some people with food allergies have even confessed to using the purifier for drinking water.
It has also been rumored that some beer brewers use the API tap water purifier for their breweries. Industrial strength, and it still works well enough to use with even the most delicate of exotic fish.
