Salt or potassium water softener?

I just bought a house with a water softener. How could I tell if its a salt or potassium water softener?

It's a Pure-Tel. Model 5600m 32g. Ser.#75134u.

How do you get the sodium out of the drinking water if used instead of potassium? Do filters work?

Also, why the big jump in price for potassium? From $9 to $20 for a 40 lb bag.

WITH MOST SOFTNERS YOU JUST GO INTO THE PROGRAM AND IT WILL ASK YOU IF YOUR USING SALT OR POTASSIUM AND YOU ADJUST IT ACORDLY. iF NOT JUST USE SALT , THERE IS NOT TO MUCH DIFFERENCE EXCEPT THE WATER WILL BE SLIGHTLY SALTY. yOU SHOULD NOT DRINK SOFTENED WATER ANYWAYS, NOT GOOD FOR YOU.
