I currently have a water softner system in my house and was curious whether it filtered out the chemicals, etc. that a RO system provides.

RO vs WATER SOFTNER SYSTEM
by: RJ H2O Services

A water softening system is designed as a POE
(point of entry system) system and is designed to remove hardness minerals such as calcium, lime, magnesium. A water softener will remove iron, manganese and lead depending on water chemistry and arsenic if it is bound with iron content in the water. A reverse osmosis system is typically used for POU (point of use) for drinking water only as Reverse Osmosis generally removes over 90% of total dissolved solids in the water. With the amount of water wasted (3-10 gallons for every gallon produced) it is not practical for whole house use.
There are times though a whole house reverse osmosis system is the only option. Such as in salt water wells and wells with extremely high TDS which can be very corrosive. Because RO water is so clean it can be very corrosive on typical household plumbing so other steps such as poly-phosphate are added to prevent corrosion of copper plumbing.
Even with a whole house RO a water softener is usually part of the pre-treatment process.
Let me know if I can be of any further help.
