Portable Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

Portable reverse osmosis water filters work by forcing the water you use through a membrane that only allows water molecules that are pure to pass.

The water that is being purified passes through the membrane and the leftover particles from the water are flushed into the drain.

A typical 3 or 4 stage countertop water filter works by providing a pre-filter where the contaminants such as chemicals, sediment and chlorine are taken out of the water. The final filtering is the finishing stage. Some systems have an extra stage where more of the harmful bacteria are taken out of the water. The new portable reverse osmosis systems are making use of technology to remove pharmaceuticals from water.

The setup is simple. All you have to do is use the diverter valve adapter to hook this system to your faucet. Turn it on, collect it in whatever type of container you will be using and you have fresh water.

For ultimate space saving, when you are finished, disconnect the system and put it away until you need it again. The portable reverse osmosis unit is only 15 inches long. It is 7 inches x 7 inches in height and width so it is very compact when it comes to storing.

This portable reverse osmosis system is a three stage system that is also widely used in apartments. This is a system that can make about two gallons of water in approximately an hour.

If you are not using a lot of water on a daily basis, this system can work well. Some of the different types of portable reverse systems have membranes that will not allow the following contaminants:

  • Arsenic

The maintenance is not complicated either. The carbon filter should be changed about every six months for average usage. If it is not used a lot, once a year would be sufficient.

These two systems seem to be about as good as any when it comes to personal usage. They are not terribly expensive and the benefits will pay for themselves in no time. They are easy to install and pure, clean water is essential to your health. They are compact and easy to store.

Pros and Cons
When it comes to portable reverse osmosis systems one of the major complaints is the water that is wasted when clean water is produced. For every gallon of water these system clean there are usually 3 or 4 gallons that are wasted. Some may not waste quite as much as others.

When purifying water that contains chlorine in the reverse osmosis system, unless the membrane is a higher quality the chlorine will weaken the walls and cause deterioration. This can be combated by using charcoal.

Most systems such as the countertop system is a very compact size so there is no need to clear a large space and it can be put away when not in use. They are easy to hook up and require no technical knowledge.

There are portable RO systems that can make as little or as much water as you need to use in a days time. From 50 to 100 gallons is the typical output of a portable system.

A portable reverse osmosis system has to have the correct water pressure to work. The normal amount is from fifty to eight-five pounds per square inch. Some localities do not have this pressure. If your water pressure is less than forty-five pounds per square inch you will probably have to use a pump.

However, if you use one that pumps the water over eighty-five pounds per square inch, the system could become damaged. This is where a pressure regulator will be needed. But keep in mind, pumps use electricity and RO systems do not require electricity to function.
