Iron Water Filter
Whole House And Other Types Of Iron Filters

Iron water filter systems can help remove a variety of contaminants from well or municipal water.

Iron in water can cause a metallic taste in drinking water, and can cause staining of sinks, toilets, tubs, washing machines, other common plumbing fixtures, and even laundry.

Iron is one of the most pervasive water contaminants, and takes one of two common forms ferric iron and ferrous iron.

Ferric iron is composed of small bits of sedimentary solid iron that are easily removed from water by mechanical filtration.

Ferrous iron is a type of iron that is dissolved in water and requires a special filtration system for removal.

Whole house iron water filters effectively removes both of these types of iron through a safe, cost-effective, chemical free method.

How Does an Iron Filtration System Work?

The system works by using manganese greensand to oxidize ferrous (dissolved) iron. Once the ferrous iron is oxidized, it becomes solid, ferric iron, which can then be removed by mechanical filtration. This two-step process works best in homes with low to intermediate iron contamination levels.

Prior to the advent of this two-step filtration system, many well water iron filter systems were expensive and required extensive maintenance. A manganese greensand water filter system is reasonably priced, and simple to maintain. Once the filter has been exhausted, you need only replace it with a new cartridge.

Whole House Iron Filters are Safe and Effective
A whole house iron filter system is a safe and effective method for removing iron from well water and municipal water. There are no unpleasant smelling or toxic chemicals involved, and this simple system will assure clean smelling, fresh tasting water and prevent rust staining of your clothing and plumbing fixtures.

In addition to removing dissolved and sedimentary iron, a manganese greensand water filtration system also oxidizes other common water contaminants. Hydrogen sulfide and manganese are two contaminants commonly found in water containing high levels of iron.

Hydrogen sulfide is the typical culprit that causes water to have to the 'rotten egg' odor of sulfur. A manganese greensand iron water filter effectively removes this smell.

Specifications for Use
This type of iron water filter should be used for water with low to intermediate levels of ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and manganese. For maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness, this product should be used for whole home filtration in homes with water iron levels of about 3 to 5 parts per million.

Hydrogen sulfide levels should be about 2 parts per million or less. If levels of these contaminants are higher in your home, the filter will still work, but may require more frequent replacement of filter cartridges.

The acidity of your water is also important in determining the effectiveness of the water filtration system. A water pH of 7.0 or higher provides the best conditions for contaminant filtration, though lower pH levels of 6.8 or 6.9 are also acceptable.

The life of a filter cartridge is a function of the contaminant levels in your water and the amount of water used each day. Iron causes the least wear on a filter, whereas manganese and hydrogen sulfide affect the lifespan of the water filter two and three times more than iron, respectively.

This means that very high levels of hydrogen sulfide and manganese will cause your filter to need replacement more often than high levels of iron alone.

Though not strictly required, in addition to a whole house iron filtration system, installation of a sediment pre-filter is recommended prior to installation of a whole house iron filtration system. This will improve the life of your iron filter cartridge and prevent excess sedimentary iron from clogging the filter before reaching capacity.

Determining Water Contaminants
If you don't know exactly what contaminants are present in your water, certain symptoms can provide a clue about the level and type of contaminants in your water.

Red or brown stains on laundry and fixtures indicate excessive iron levels, whereas black staining indicates an excess of manganese. As previously mentioned, a rotten egg smell is almost always due to hydrogen sulfide contamination.

Cost Effective Iron Water Filter System
A two-step manganese greensand iron water filter offers significant advantages over other iron removal systems. It is highly effective, inexpensive, and easy to maintain. There are no harmful chemicals involved, and this system will not add toxic byproducts to your water.

The system is small, easy to install, easy to use, and septic safe. For many homes, this simple yet effective system provides the best and most cost effective option for filtration of iron and other contaminants in well and municipal water.
