How to combine a water softener and a water filter

by Jalyn

We are remodeling a house and installing a water softener since we have very hard water. We are also installing an under the sink reverse osmosis filter.

Should the water running to the RO system be ran through the water softener first or not? It seems that the softener would add potassium/sodium to the water and then the RO system would have to remove it.

Check your water hardness

Jalyn, if your water hardness is over 10gpg, the reverse osmosis system will perform better operating on soft water.

You can expect better life from the filters and membrane on softened water. The sodium is not a problem, as the membrane will remove it.
