How does the resin supposed to look like? (Sears Kenmore water softener MODEL # 625.38817)

I have a Sears Kenmore water softener MODEL # 625.388170 Serial #9856. My concern is the resin tank and the resin that goes inside of it.

My washing machine supply lines keep getting plugged up with what looks like the resin from the tank. It's light brown and very fine particles. It's also clogging my faucets.

My question is: what is the resin supposed to look like? Both good and bad.

Mine is like a mush inside the resin tank. Is that normal??? Thank You very much for your time and expertise.

Sincerely, Robert Hutcherson

Resin issue

Water softener Resins are very fine beads that can be brown to blond in color. The only way you can see the resin is by taking the control valve off the resin tank. If these fine beads are getting in the water supply it typically is an indication that the outlet manifold/distributor in resin tank has cracked and is letting resin through system. I would recommend by-passing the system until this problem is rectified or water softener replaced. This problem will only get worse and can be virtually impossible to flush all the resin from a water heater. Depending on how much resin was lost and how old system is, being a sears it may be more cost effective to replace system than repair.
