How do drinking water purifiers work?
When tap water enters the water-purifying device the water molecules travel through a membrane. This membrane is made of a 0.0001 semi-permeable type of membrane.
The long sheets of membrane material are rolled around a central tube and the water molecules are forced through the membrane by waterpower. This part of the purifier is usually referred to as the spiral membrane or spiral wound membrane.
The membranes are available in different sizes and can process different amounts of water. The usual house water purifying device has a spiral membrane of 2" x 10" long. Industrial purifiers may have membranes of up to 40" long.
The membrane is housed within some form of container to keep the water pressure constant. The pressure forces the water through the membrane and unwanted chemicals are filtered out.
The filtered out components then proceed to automatically leave the device through the drain system that it is attached to so that there is absolutely no build-up of chemical waste in the drinking water filters.
The membrane is kept clean and there is hardly any maintenance. A purifying system that works this way can last for many years before the membrane needs replacing.
