Drinking Water Filters
An Overview Of Different Filtering Systems

Drinking water filters are easily available and can be placed in any home due to the variety available.

People who are interested in filtering their drinking water usually start with a pitcher equipped with an activated carbon filter. This filter is changed every month or so.

If you get impatient with having to refill the pitcher repeatedly and wait for the water to be filtered, the next best thing is the faucet-mount water filtration system.

This system attaches to your faucet, and filters the water as it pours from the tap. Most have the option of turning the filtration off if you don’t want to filter the water you use to wash dishes or perform other tasks.

Countertop models are an alternative. While it does take up counter space, it attaches conveniently to your faucet and will filter your water just fine. Prices are a bit higher for the countertop drinking water system, but you have several models to choose from.

If you don’t like the way a faucet-mounted system and the countertop model takes up valuable sink space, you may want to try an undersink drinking water filter.

Filtered Drinking Water
This remains hidden under the sink, but may require the services of a plumber to install if you are not an experienced do-it-yourselfer.

Reverse osmosis water filtration systems work a little differently.

They are not as efficient as the other options (they require approximately five gallons of water to produce one gallon of pure drinking water), but they are the only option if you are in an area with nitrates and percholates in your water.

How Drinking Water Filter Systems Work

Most filters for drinking water use cartridges of activated carbon, which are very effective at removing many chemicals and organisms from tap water. Carbon cartridges will also improve the odor and taste of your drinking water. Heavy metals are also removed by carbon filters.

Reverse osmosis water filter systems utilize a semi-permeable membrane between two fluid concentrations… one dilute and one concentrated. It is normal for the concentrated fluid to flow through the membrane into the dilute fluid. In reverse osmosis, the fluid is forced through the membrane, resulting in a lower concentration, or purer, water for drinking.

Why Use Them?

Using a drinking water filter will save you money. Not only is bottled water more expensive, studies have shown that many brands of bottled water are no different than your unfiltered tap water.

Filtering drinking water also benefits your health. Ingesting chemicals like chlorine on a daily basis can undermine your health. By filtering your water, you are ingesting less toxicity into your body and giving your body the pure water it needs.

Best Brands

If you’re just starting out with filtering your water, you could try it inexpensively by choosing the Brita Aqualux Water Pitcher.

An indicator light lets you know when the filter needs to be changed, and putting in a new filter is easy.

Consumers rate this pitcher very highly, both for the ease of use and for its great tasting filtered water.

Since Brita is a common brand, filters are easy to find both locally and online.

If you’d like to try a water filter mounted on your faucet, take a look at the Teledyne Water Pik Insta-Pure Faucet Water Filter, Chrome #F-2C.

Highly rated by consumers, the Teledyne water filter installs easily on just about any faucet, including RVs and boats.

Filter cartridges last approximately three months with regular use. The Teledyne is inexpensive to buy and cost effective to use for great tasting water.

Even more affordable is the Culligan Faucet Filter #FM15. Easy to install, it is also small enough that it doesn’t get in the way of using your sink. Filter cartridges have a long life, and the Culligan gives great tasting water.
