Culligan Platinum Ion Exchange water softener

I bought the Culligan Platinum Ion Exchange water softener back in 2002, it's now 2010. It has had several problems over the years and required warranty service more and once and out of warranty once.

That's not my gripe with it, and the salt hauling doesn't really bother me at all. The problem I have with it is that it kills my water heaters.

In the 8 odd years that I've owned my house, I've had two water heaters. One that was replaced under warranty with a leaky tank and another that is now nearing death, this one after only about 2.5 years. Obviously, this isn't going to work long term.

The Culligan Platinum Ion Exchange water softener works well, it makes the water soft and does so economically on salt so no complaints there, but the water heater killing is not something I want to deal with long term. so it goes, I need something else.

Jeff, I don,t believe the soft water is at fault. Although if you have high TDS with high chlorides this can can cause premature failure of the water heater. Because of the corrosive properties of the water. Have you experienced any problems with your dishwasher or washing machine?
Please check these other possibilities.

1. Was the anode rod pulled from the water heater? This may cause premature failure.
2. More likely you have a bad ground in the plumbing system which is causing electrolysis and the water heater to rust out. Try placing a grounding strap from the cold water feed to the hot side. Was Water heater installed with Dia-electric Unions? If High efficiency WH test outlet where it is plugged in.
You can purchase a simple polarity and ground tester at your local hardware store.
Good luck,
RJ
