Culligan Medalist Series water softener with low salt

by Elaine Robinson

We have a Culligan Medalist Series Water Softener and the salt has gotten very low. My husband found that the salt had bridged.

He did not want to force a broom handle too far into the remaining salt for fear of doing damage to the bottom of the salt container.

How far does the salt go down into the container? He will be adding new salt, but does not want to do so if the old salt is bridge. The level is about down to a quarter from the bottom of the container.

Is there an easy method to break up the bridging?

Low Salt

Elaine, there are generally 2 problems associated with brine tank salt problems.

1) Salt bridging which is a platform of salt above the water line. To break this bridge use a broom handle or something rigid, that is not sharp. Force this into the bridge several times until the bridge or platform falls into the water below it.
2) Salt caking is when the salt is hardened or compressed together all the way through to the bottom of the brine tank.
In this case you will need to remove the brine tank by disconnecting the fitting from the water softener system valve. Tip the brine tank on its side and tap on the side where the salt is caked to break it up. You may also try to scoop it out as well. Reconnect the brine tank to the water softener valve, fill with salt and about 5 gallons of water then wait 2 hours and manually regenerate the water softening system.
