Ceramic Water Filter
Effective, Affordable And Simple To Use

A ceramic water filter uses small-sized pore ceramic material in filtering dirt and bacteria out of water.

However, this type of filtration does not involve the removal of chemical contaminants.

As with most filtration methods, water is poured to one side of the ceramic filter, which blocks any molecule larger than the water molecules from passing through.

Nowadays, ceramic water filters are applied with colloidal silver, which helps in incapacitating bacteria and in preventing the growth of molds and algae in the body of the filter.

However, the silver media applied in filters may cause side effects that may be harmful to human health.

How It Works

This type of water filtration system consists of a porous ceramic filter that is placed on top of a plastic receptacle or in a safer receptacle that is made of ceramic. Contaminated water is introduced to one side of the filter and passes through the filter down to the receptacle.

The contaminants larger than the water holes of the ceramic material will remain on top, which is very easy to clean by brushing the inside of the top portion of the filter or by using hot water and soap.

There are also portable ceramic water filters made today, for example the MSR Miniworks that works using manual pumping, and in-line ceramic filters that filter drinking water in the household plumbing. These filters are very easy to clean.

You use the same process as with cleaning clay pot filters, where portable filters allow reverse-flow cleaning, introducing clean water through the clean side of the filter pushing any contaminants out of the ceramic pore.

Disadvantages

Ceramic filters also have disadvantages, resulting from careless handling of the material. Thus thin cracks and cross-contamination occurs. Hairline cracks, resulting from friction, are hard to see with the naked eye and give passage to larger contaminants through the filter.

As a result, the filtration will be ineffective and instead of cleaning the water, contamination to the water occurs.

Another case that may cause contamination to the water in the process of filtration is the contact of the clean side of the filter with dirty water, dirty hands, and any other object that is a carrier of bacteria. If such contact occurs, sterilize the clean side of the filter before using it again in filtering contaminated water.

Despite these disadvantages, is it still advisable to use a ceramic water filter?

Consider the fact that it is inexpensive and at the same time effective. Although there are more expensive models, they all have the same effect except for blocking almost every contaminant.

Ceramic water filter systems have already saved thousands of lives around the world and that includes the number of people saved from diarrhea in Myanmar, Columbia and in other countries.

They have proven very effective, affordable and simple to use. We recommend shopping for ceramic and other types of water filters on Amazon.com where you can also check consumer reviews for a more objective opinion about each model.
