Bottle Water Purifier
Katadyn Is Your Best Choice

A bottle water purifier provides the best of both worlds for anyone who needs the convenience of a water bottle and the function of a water purifier.

Hikers, backpackers, and cyclists, along with anyone fishing or hunting, need ready access to a clean water supply, while also needing a way to drink the water that does not require an open cup.

For them, and anyone else with those needs, bottle water purifiers have the ability to perform the functions that fill both needs.

Why Use Bottle Purifiers?
Traditional water purifiers require the user to collect the water, filter the water, purify the water, and then transfer the water to a container for drinking.

Not only can this be a time-consuming, tedious task, but it also requires storage and carrying of both purifier and cup or water bottle, along with some type of filtering system.

A bottle water purifier contains all of the essential elements, from filter to purifier to water bottle, in one easily portable, self-contained package.

How Do They Work?
Typically, water purifiers work through a series of filters. One filter removes particles from the water, one removes cysts, and one kills bacteria and viruses.

Generally, bottle purifiers also help protect against chemical contaminants, although not every model available has an effect on chemicals in the water.

With most models the series of filters is located in, or attached to, the cap. Water is collected in the bottle, and the cap is then secured tightly to the bottle.

Users then squeeze the bottle to activate water movement through the filters, and then simply drink from the drinking straw in the cap. There is no need for pumping or adding chemicals, and there is virtually no wait time before accessing the purified water.

Recommended Bottle Water Purifiers

One of the most popular models is the Exstream XR water bottle purifier from Katadyn. This is also the only model currently registered with the U.S. EPA as a purification system.

The Exstream XR can hold up to 28 ounces of water, and fits perfectly in most standard water bottle holders. For those who need to attach the bottle, it also comes with an attached carry loop.

The Exstream XR bottle purifier has a three-step filtering system. Water passes through a carbon filter, which eliminates particles and helps reduce unpleasant tastes and odors.

After the carbon filter, water moves into a filter designed to remove cysts, like Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Finally, viruses and microbes are removed from the water with a ViruStat purification system. With this Katadyn water filter, 99.99 percent of waterborne viruses and microbes are eliminated.

Drawbacks
As with all water purifiers, there are drawbacks to using bottle water purifiers. Although relatively minor, the most noticeable drawback is the need to replace filters.

Filter cartridges should be replaced any time the water purifier has been unused for a long period. In addition, filter cartridges are only good for approximately 100 uses, so they must be changed whenever they start to show signs of wear.

The other drawback to bottle models is the use of chemicals in the filtration system. The Exstream XR, for example, has iodine resin in the filtration cartridge.

While iodine is an excellent way to destroy microorganisms, it also presents an allergy threat for some people. Even those who are pregnant or nursing would need to check with their physicians before using the water purifier.

Although there are minor drawbacks to using bottle water purifiers, the benefits are enormous. Users can access clean, safe drinking water within a matter of minutes, and the purifiers are hands-free and require virtually no effort.
