Berkey Portable Water Purifier Berkey Models Need No External Energy Source
The Berkey portable water purifier line offers enough variety to meet the needs, and the budget, of every user.
Manufactured by New Millennium Concepts, Berkey water purifiers are designed to be an environmentally friendly, economical method of purifying both raw and treated water sources.
Sport Berkey
The Sport Berkey is the smallest member of the Berkey line, weighing in at a mere 5.5 ounces. The Sport Berkey is a water purifier combined with a water bottle, offering convenience and safety in one package.
The Sport Berkey is also easy to use. Simply fill the bottle with water, and screw the cap on tightly. Squeezing the bottle pushes water through the filter and into the drinking straw in the cap.
The Sport Berkey is also economical for anyone who wants their own safe drinking water.
The Sport Berkey holds up to 20 ounces of water, and the filter can purify up to 640 times when used with treated water or 160 times when used with turbid water. In addition, the bottle and filtration cartridge have a shelf life of up to 50 years.
Travel Berkey
Although larger than the Sport Berkey, the Travel Berkey is a portable water purifier. When transporting, the upper chamber of the Travel Berkey fits into the lower chamber, making it 12 inches in height and 7.5 inches in diameter.
When in use, the purifier stands 18 inches high. The Travel Berkey is made of stainless steel, and can hold up to 1.5 gallons of water in storage.
Like other Berkey portable water purifiers, the Travel Berkey is easy to use. Screw in the filtration element(s) and the spigot, and then snap the chambers and base together.
Water is poured into the upper chamber, and is drawn by gravity through the filtration system into the lower chamber. Water can then be drawn out through a spigot on the lower chamber.
When using two Berkey elements, the Travel Berkey can purify up to 2 3/4 gallons per hour.
Benefits of a Berkey
A Berkey portable water purifier offers several benefits to users. The first, and possibly most important, benefit is their patented filtration system.
The same filtration system is used in every Berkey water purifier, from the Sport Berkey to the largest available models.
The filtration system of the Sport Berkey is called the "Tortuous Path" because it is twisting and complex.
The filter contains media that is specially designed to absorb contaminants like mercury or lead, while the filter itself removes biological contaminants from the water.
The purifier removes 99.9999 percent of contaminants and, because no chemicals are used, produces safe drinking water with no aftertaste.
The Berkey purification elements offer another benefit to users. In addition to being powerful enough to remove food coloring from water, they are self-sterilizing, which eliminates the need to constantly sterilize filters before use.
If the flow rate decreases, users can simply brush the element with a scrubbing pad, like ScotchBrite, under running water, and then reinstall the element. Each element is good for approximately 3,000 gallons of water, making their affordable price even lower over the course of time.
Berkey portable water purifiers also rely on gravity for the purification process. No batteries or external power sources are required.
This means that a Berkey water purifier can be used in any environment, even in the case of a total blackout or lack of any power source. For those traveling into extreme, remote locations, this can be one of the biggest benefits of a Berkey water purifier.
Berkey portable water purifiers can meet the needs of both individuals and small groups, depending on the model chosen. With their powerful filtration system and ease of use, users can be assured of a continuous supply of clean, safe drinking water with no aftertaste.
